Smoking Mothers Increases Infant's Blood Pressure

Researchers have given mums-to-be yet another reason to kick the butt by finding that babies whose mothers smoke during pregnancy have substantially higher blood pressures in their first months of life.
The study was carried out by researchers at the University Medical Center Utrecht in The Netherlands, led by Caroline C. Geerts, a doctoral student at Julius Center for Health Sciences and Primary Care. The study, of 456 infants in The Netherlands, showed that by age 2 months, babies born to mothers who smoked had higher systolic blood pressures compared to those whose mothers didn't smoke and weren't exposed to smoke during pregnancy. 6.6 percent of the mothers (30 subjects) reported smoking during pregnancy; another 13.8 percent (63 subjects) reported they did not smoke, but were exposed to smoke; and 79.6 percent of mothers (363 subjects) said they were not exposed to smoke during pregnancy. The overall blood pressures of the mothers weren't significantly different among these groups. However, researchers found an association between maternal smoking and newborn systolic blood pressure, although they didn't find significant difference between smoke exposure and newborn diastolic blood pressure and heart rate. Systolic blood pressure (SBP), the larger of the two numbers that make up a blood pressure reading, represents the blood pressure when the heart is fully contracted. The diastolic pressure is the lower number of a blood pressure reading and occurs when the heart relaxes.
The researchers found that babies born to mothers who smoked during pregnancy had 5.4 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) higher systolic blood pressure levels. This estimate was obtained after controlling for birth weight, infant age, gender, nutrition and age of the mother - all factors that could affect the blood pressure of the infant.
"Our findings indicate maternal smoking during pregnancy has a direct substantial impact on systolic blood pressure in early infancy and is another reason for women not to smoke during pregnancy," said Caroline C. Geerts. "This association appears to occur in utero and doesn't appear to be due to the postnatal environment of the infant," she added. The researchers discovered male infants were more likely to have higher systolic blood pressures if their mothers smoked. Male offspring of smoking mothers had 8.6 mmHg higher systolic blood pressures than infants not exposed to tobacco smoke in utero. "We can only speculate on the reason for this. Perhaps gender is a modifier of stress responses including smoke exposure," said Geerts. The researchers also found that newborns of mothers who smoked in pregnancy were significantly lighter, shorter and had a smaller chest circumference than other offspring. Mothers who smoked in pregnancy were also less inclined to breastfeed their infants. However, the researchers said that birth weight, infant age, gender, infant nutrition or maternal age did not explain the systolic blood pressure findings. "We aren't sure that the increases in systolic blood pressure will continue in time," Geerts said. "It is unknown if our findings will have an impact on blood pressure later in life." Geerts insisted that it's important to study infants and children to obtain a better insight into cardiovascular disease that occurs later in life. "There is increasing evidence that later-life ischemic cardiovascular diseases originate in early childhood," she said. "Childhood cardiovascular risk factor profiles, including overweight, smoking and sedentary lifestyles, are increasing health problems with substantial future consequences. From a prevention point of view, it is important to determine these early life risk factors, to know at what age they exert vascular damage, and ultimately whether childhood interventions lead to actual cardiovascular risk reduction," she added. The study is reported in Hypertension: Journal of the American Heart Association.

Juhi Chawla - Guruji had the faith in me

Actress Juhi Chawla's classical side came to the fore in a serious classical music performance in honour of her Guru, Pandit Pandharinath Kolhapure at Mumbai University's VV Bhavan, Churchgate on July 30, at 5pm on the occasion of Guru Purnima. Sajid-Wajid to be Salman's voice in POKKIRI remake

Apart from the financial windfall, the super-success of PARTNER has benefited most of the people associated with it. In fact, the audio of PARTNER has suddenly rocketed to the top, within the last week, and that is heartening news for the out of circulation (for a while), Sajid-Wajid. Not only have they composed some catchy tunes for PARTNER, both Sajid and Wajid have also sung a few tracks in the album. It now seems that Salman Khan (buoyed by the success) has decided to repose faith in his current favourite duo. As is well known by now, both Sajid and Wajid, have already been signed by Boney Kapoor, as the music director(s) of his POKKIRI remake (some say, WANTED DEAD AND ALIVE), being directed by Prabhu Devaa. It has now been heard that Salman Khan wants the composer duo to be his voice in the movie, once again.

Perry Patel - The man who gave colors to CASH

If you are wondering what makes the men in CASH different from the rest of their ilk, you know who deserves all the compliments. He is stylist Perry Patel who is responsible for giving unique hair color to all the guys in the film. So while Ajay sports a blond-brown shaggy cut, Zayed has dark blue streaks while Riteish has a blond-black streaked look. In fact as per sources, so impressed was Ajay Devgan with Perry's work that he instantly roped him in for his directorial debut U, ME AUR HUM. Perry is also excited about giving a unique look to Zayed since as per him; an electric blue shade on hair would be the first time ever in Indian cinema. He wasn't as successful though with Suneil Shetty since he couldn't apply color on his hair. Nevertheless, he was at least successful in using some gel for his eyebrows.

Bollywood star jailed for six years

MUMBAI, India (Reuters) -- An Indian court jailed Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt for six years on Tuesday for acquiring illegal weapons from gangsters involved in India's worst bombings that killed 257 people in 1993.
Dutt, 48, was cleared of conspiracy charges in the serial blasts in India's financial capital of Mumbai, but was found guilty of unauthorized possession of an automatic rifle and a pistol.
"It was an eminently dangerous act," judge Pramod Kode said. "With the punishment of a minimum of five years and maximum of 10 years it can in no way be a minor offence or of a less grave nature."
Dutt's trial has transfixed India and fans of Bollywood, the world's largest film industry by ticket sales. He has millions of dollars riding on him in films under production.
The actor is the most high-profile among 100 people, mostly Muslims, found guilty in the bombings trial, one of the world's longest-running court cases.
The 1993 Mumbai attacks were ordered by India's most wanted man, Dawood Ibrahim, a Muslim, to avenge the razing of a 16th-century mosque by Hindu zealots in 1992 and subsequent Hindu-Muslim riots in India, police say.
Ibrahim and his top associates have not faced trial, as they fled the country soon after the blasts, police say. Ibrahim is believed to be hiding in Pakistan, but the government in Islamabad denies this.
Dutt's lawyers had urged that the actor, who found fame playing gangsters and anti-heroes, be set free for his good behaviour during his bail.
But the court rejected the argument.
Son of legendary film couple Sunil Dutt and Nargis, the heavy-set actor has been on bail since 1995 after more than a year in prison during initial investigations into the blasts.

Salman Khan Dumps Himesh

Salman Khan has a new voice, as the actor has decided that singer Wajid will sing for him in his forthcoming films. Salman Khan is known for adopting protégées and giving them a break in bollywood in any way he can.

Earlier, Salman had taken singer Himesh Reshammiya under his wing and Himesh’s career as a music composer grew after he composed music for most of Salman’s films.

Unfortunately though Himesh and Salman soon went their own ways after Himseh began singing for other film banners. Now Salman has decided to replace Himesh with singer Wajid’s voice in his forthcoming films.

Salman was extremely impressed with Wajid’s voice after he sang for him in his recent film Partner.

Singer Wajid of the duo Sajid-Wajid is also extremely thrilled to be Salman’s voice; he says, “I am proud to be the voice of Salmanbhai. We were at the music sittings of 'Partner' and I was singing the song to explain how it should go, that’s when bhai said I should sing the song myself.”

Wajid has already sung a couple of songs for Salman in his films 'God Tussi Great Ho', 'Partner', remake of 'Pokhiri' etc.

Wajid’s songs for 'Partner' are already becoming a rage. Salman’s earlier protégée Himesh meanwhile claims that working with Salman is a good opportunity for Wajid and his singing career.

Meanwhile, Salman is all set to act in Boney Kapoor’s remake of the Tamil hit film 'Pokhiri', the Hindi version will be titled 'Wanted Dead or Alive'.

The film will mark the Hindi debut of choreographer turned director Prabhu Deva who will be directing his first Hindi film. Prabhu Deva and Salman seem to have bonded well and the two may also be seen gyrating together on-screen for the film.

Producer Boney Kapoor says, “I’m sure Prabhu will make a token appearance as a good luck charm.” Prabhu Deva has directed several films in Telugu and hence producer Boney is confident of his abilities as a director.

Defination Of Love

"Love means to commit oneself without guarantee, to give oneself completely in the hope that our love will produce love in the loved person. Love is an act of faith, and whoever is of little faith is also of little love."
