Salman rocks Rajiv Gandhi awards

The 11th Rajiv Gandhi Annual awards was held on August 17, in Mumbai, and saw quite a few Bollywood personalities.

One of the highlights of the show was Salman Khan's rocking performance. It may be recalled that Salman had bagged the Rajiv Gandhi award last year.

Interestingly, Vivek Oberoi had used the platform of the Rajiv Gandhi awards last year to apologise ro Salman. In the midst of a performance, Vivek held his ears, and looked directly at Salman, sitting in the audience.

Will Saif flash his Colgate smile on TV?

Will Saif Ali Khan follow his colleagues Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Shilpa Shetty to television? It seems to be a possibility, as the actor said that he would like to host a chat show or game show some day.

Saif, the brand ambassador of Colgate, met the winners of the Colgate MaxFresh Meet the Stars Contest at Taj Lands End, Bandra, in the Western suburb of Mumbai, recently. He was accompanied by the gorgeous Asin.

Deepika or Preity: Who makes a better face on TV?
Old is not gold, the advertising world seems to say. Especially if you're an actress.
Preity Zinta had to learn this the hard way, when she was dropped as the endorser for India's cellular network, BSNL, making way for the younger Deepika Padokune.
According to sources, Preity's contract with BSNL ended this month and they were not eager to retain her as their brand ambassador.

Katrina or Ash: Who makes a better face on TV?

Recently, 34-year-old Aishwarya Rai Bachchan had to make way for the younger Katrina Kaif to endorse Nakshatra diamond jewellary. Of course, husband Abhishek Bachchan claimed that Ash had walked out because the terms of the contract did not suit her.

Genelia or Rani: Who makes a better face on TV?

Before that, 30-year-old Rani Mukerji was asked to step down as the brand ambassador of Nestle's Munch, after endorsing it for four years.
Rumour has it that Genelia D'Souza, after her Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na success, will step in.

************$$$$************
What do you think? Would you prefer to watch a younger woman entice you into buying something, like Deepika, Katrina or Genelia? Or would you prefer the classic beauties like Preity, Ash and Rani? Tell us!

'I used to cry buckets of tears'

Katrina's big moment came with her pairing with Akshay Kumar in Humko Deewana Kar Gaye (2006). It gave her career the required impetus.
Vipul Shah, who took notice of her in a Samsung commercial was hell-bent on having her opposite Akshay for Namastey London, which went on to become one of the biggest hits of last year.
The producer of Singh is Kinng, another Akshay-Katrina starrer, says, "She is extremely professional and her perfectionist streak has led her to taste success so early in her career."
While she kept signing one film after the other, her personal life took a back seat. Salman and she had their share of misunderstandings. Increasing outdoor schedules only added to the stress.
"I used to call my mum everyday, and she was in London then. I can't tell you what it was about. But at times it used to be like the end of the world. I used to cry buckets of tears," says Katrina, who feels that she is no longer as sensitive and emotional as she used to be.
But reticent she continues to be. She won't comment on Salman's former love, Aishwarya Rai and despite going strong with Salman for almost four years, she has never publicly admitted to the relationship.
"I don't [talk about my relationship] because Salman wouldn't do it. Ask Salman a question about me and he wouldn't answer."
She doesn't deny the hiccups in her relationship, as reported by the tabloids, when she says: "I'm sure I have been taken for granted but no one is to be blamed for that except for myself. If you cannot give yourself that respect then how can other people give you that respect?"

'I didn't know anyone except for Amitji'

For Katrina, who was born in Hong Kong, raised in Hawaii and London, the Indian film industry never really existed until she got here.
"I didn't know anyone except for Amitji [Amitabh Bachchan]. He had a statue at Madame Tussauds. If someone was introduced to me as very successful, I gave them the appropriate respect," says Katrina, who watched her first Hindi film at the age of 19.
It was her urge to embrace the work ethics of a film industry in a distant country that made filmmakers take notice of her. She made a forgettable debut in 2003 with Kaizad Gustad's Boom; the movie tanked at the box office, but people wanted to see more of the leggy lass. Jackie Shroff, her first co-star (in Boom), knew that she was destined to be a popular star.
"On the first day of the shoot, she was lost and lonely. But once we started shooting she was all ears to the director. During the schedule, I realised that she was disciplined and focused," he says.
On the other hand, Katrina was overwhelmed by the warmth of her co-stars, who looked after her. "I was so shocked by the warmth of the city and the people," says Katrina, who found friends in supermodel Madhu Sapre and designer and stylist Anna Singh on the sets of the film.
Anna says, "I guided her as much as I could. On the sets of Boom, I used to feed her and make her familiar with names of actors and directors. By the end of the film, she had put on a good three to four kilos."
Realising that Indo-English films like Boom only catered to a niche audience, she started taking interest in mainstream Hindi films. She started learning Hindi with the help of a tutor.
"I first learnt how to read the language and once I got a grasp of it, I could read scripts in Hindi. It took me about two-and-a-half years to improve on the reading," says the actress, who can comfortably communicate with her staff in Hindi.

'Because of Salman, she got to work with the right people'

It was former supermodel and choreographer Alison Kanuga, who got Katrina introduced to Salman at his sister Alvira's birthday party at Salman's apartment.
"She met Salman for the very first time at Alvira's birthday party. Since Katrina and I were already friends I asked her to come along with me to the party," says Alison, who met Katrina at a film screening in Mumbai.
Salman, who was then distraught after parting ways with Aishwarya Rai, took an instant liking to her and the duo ended up spending the entire evening together. That chance meeting led to another and in a matter of few days Salman was wooing Katrina. Soon they were in a serious relationship.
Whenever she got off work early, Katrina rushed to meet her boyfriend at film studios and his apartment. They started hanging out at coffee shops in Bandra, and going for long walks with Salman's pet dogs Myson and Myjaan along the Bandstand promenade. But what she enjoyed the most was taking bike rides with her boyfriend in the wee hours of the morning. As their love became stronger, Salman started supervising her, while she was readying to move from modelling to films.
"By then she was already a popular name in the modelling circuit. She thought that making a progression to films will be a good idea," says an industry insider.
It was only under Salman's guidance that she clinched a big role opposite him in brother Sohail Khan's production, Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya in 2005. The film made good business at the box office and her chemistry with Salman prompted other filmmakers to woo her with film scripts.
Director David Dhawan, who was looking for a fresh face for MPKK, signed her on instantly once he met her. He says, "Yes, I met her through Salman. She had a fresh face and she suited the role. [Also] She has a great memory. Even though she wasn't well versed in the language, she used to mug her lines very well."
Filmmaker and president of AMPTPP (Association of Motion Pictures and TV Program Producers), Pahlaj Nihalani, who met Katrina when she was running from pillar to post to get her visa extended, attributes UK-citizen Katrina's stupendous success to Salman Khan and his family.
He says, "Because of Salman she got to work with the right people and in the right manner... I will give full credit to Salman and his family for providing her with shelter, professional advice and guidance."
With her family away in London, she started confiding in and socialising with Salman's family members. "They are a part of the social circle that I move in. They are tremendously wonderful people," says Katrina, who is particularly fond of her beau's siblings Alvira Khan Agnihotri and Sohail Khan.

'I'm more submissive than Salman'

Five years ago, a teenager landed in Mumbai to make a career in showbiz. Today, Katrina Kaif has becoming one of the most successful actresses in the film industry. In its latest issue, People magazine got up close and personal with the beautiful actress to know more. We present an excerpt:
It was five years ago that Katrina Kaif, then 19, arrived in Mumbai to make a career in the modelling industry. Accompanying her were mother Susana and sisters Christine and Isabella. She did not celebrate her birthday that year. This year as she turned 24 on July 16, almost the entire film industry A-list descended at Olive Bar & Kitchen, a Mumbai restaurant and bar, to wish the model-turned-actress.
"I was all alone on my first birthday in Mumbai. I hardly stepped out of my house, as I didn't know anyone then," says the actress. This year it was celebrated, according to a guest, with flavoured Martinis, an assortment of mocktails, lamb chop, balsamic mushroom, grilled prawns and rock salt fish doing the rounds.
Katrina had over 70 people including stars, star wives, star kids, filmmakers, producers, designers and choreographers attending her private bash. Not surprisingly Katrina says it is only this year that she feels a sense of belonging to the industry. That she speaks Hindi and has a string of box-office hits can only add to her being at home.
"I know so many people now. I'm a part of the circuit and also part of discussions for movies that are being planned. I'm aware of what's happening around," she says.
A large part of the credit in making Katrina feel comfortable in the film fraternity goes to beau Salman Khan, who is dating the model-turned-actress for a little over four years now.
Katrina describes herself as the submissive one in the intense relationship. "I think by nature I'm slightly more submissive. Cancerians are docile people," she says.
Salman and his extended family supported her during the formative years of her career. "I do remember the first time I had met Salman but these are personal things," says the actress who spends considerable time at Galaxy Apartments, Salman's Bandra residence, whenever she is in Mumbai.

'I feel more confident today since I have achieved something'

Her answers do not divulge much, but between the lines there is a lot. She says, "What I have found [from my experience] is that you can forgive someone for doing something like that [wrong]. You can honestly feel that you have forgiven them but later on in life, those things will eat away [the relationship]."
The actress didn't sleep all night after Salman and Shah Rukh's spat at her birthday party this year. A friend of the actress says, "She is recovering from it. She is trying her best to behave normally."
Talking about the episode Katrina says: "You cannot have control on everything in life. Things happen..."
Will she have a similar bash next year? "I don't know. I think I will," says the actress, who received a diamond bracelet from Salman on her birthday. She continues to work on her relationship and tries to spend as much time as she can with Salman.
Recently, she was in a hurry to finish a shoot so that she could watch an episode of 10 Ka Dum featuring Govinda and David Dhawan with Salman. The two cuddled up while watching the episode at Salman's house, and later cracked jokes while having dinner, say sources.
"She has a whacky sense of humour. There are certain jokes that only the two of us can appreciate," says her close friend Arjun Kapoor. However, the couple is not working together in too many films. "It's the best thing and we are doing what is best for everyone right now," says Katrina, currently taping for Subhash Ghai's Yuvraaj with Salman.
"I feel more confident today since I have achieved something," says Katrina. Even as rumours of her alleged closeness to Akshay Kumar continue, she lays it all at fate's door.
"Yes, all our films have done well, and they have [mostly] released in the last one-and-a-half years. But that's destiny, not in my hands or Salman's hands or Akshay's hands."
And sure there rings some truth about the hand of fate for an anonymous and aspiring model, who in five years has moved to becoming the most successful Hindi film heroine of 2008.

Why we love her

Where do we begin? With the music we grew up to? The records she has set? The colour she brought into an otherwise staid entertainment business?
Let's just stick to her achievements, if only to prove we're not the only ones who think of Madonna as one of our biggest stars. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked her Number 36 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.
In 2007, VH1 listed her eighth in the Greatest Women of Rock & Roll. In 2008, she surpassed Elvis Presley's record of the most top ten hits in the history of Billboard Hot 100.
Her Confessions Tour is the highest grossing concert tour by a female artist. In March this year, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
In the years to come, we hope to see a lot more of Madonna. Will she surprise us with another stunning album? A book of photography? A collection of paintings? A film that wins her an Oscar? We don't know. We're just glad to have her around.
Happy Birthday, Madonna!

The queen of controversy

Without Madonna, half the world's tabloids in the 1980s would have nothing to write about. Her work has always attracted controversy, primarily on account of its sexual themes and religious symbolism. She has managed to annoy religious leaders the world over, and doesn't look like she's about to stop doing so anytime soon.
Her first US tour, The Virgin Tour, got a lot of people hot and bothered. In 1992, she published a book of photographs, titled Sex, which generated a lot of negative publicity.
Then there's the speculation about her relationships with other women. In 2003, Madonna performed with Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Missy Elliott at the MTV Video Music Awards and kissed Spears and Aguilera during the performance.
In 2006, she was criticised for wearing fur. That same year, she travelled to Malawi to help build an orphanage, and adopted a boy named David Banda Mwale, a move that led to legal disputes. There's also her devotion to the Kabbalah, and the criticism that has attracted.
We could go on. Madonna, however, doesn't seem to care.

Madonna, 50

Madonna who?
You can't be serious! Even those who claim they have ears for classical music alone would be lying if they said they hadn't heard of Madonna.
On August 16, 2008, the world will have had five decades of the Queen of Pop. And going by the way she's still kicking up those well-toned heels on stage, we can probably look forward to five decades more.
For those who just came in -- presumably after listening to a stirring version of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata -- here's a quick look at how Madonna changed the world.
Born in Michigan, USA, on August 16, 1958 (to a French Canadian mom and Italian American dad), Madonna Louise Ciccone Ritchie moved to New York as a teenager in pursuit of a career in modern dance.
She joined a couple of forgettable pop musical groups, before deciding to walk down a path of her own making. The result was a self-titled debut album that took her straight to the top, and kept her there for a very, very long time.

Learn Mariah Carey's super slimming secrets!

Singer Mariah Carey recently dropped three dress sizes and has gone from 'ugh' to 'oomph'! Want to find out how she did it? Here are her slimming tips.
Remember pics of Mimi in the news up until this year? It was clear that the size 8 chanteuse was fighting the battle of the bulge, especially since she likes wearing itty-bitty skimpy clothing.
But now it's a whole different ballgame -- Mimi is more than 20 pounds slimmer thanks to her French health and fitness trainer Patricia Gay. Here are snippets of her regime as described on The Oprah Winfrey Show, but be warned -- it's not easy at all!

Let's rock 'n' roll!

No one, who claims to have a fondness for rock 'n' roll, can forget August 15, 1969 -- day one of Woodstock.
A massive rock festival in Bethel, New York, it drew thousands of people who were entertained by a magnificent set of influential musicians.
More importantly, it went on to become an iconic moment in the sixties, and the history of popular music. Almost three decades later, Woodstock II took place near the site of the legendary first concert, attracting around 300,000 people.
Pop in a DVD of the original concert this weekend. It will take you back like few concerts will, to a time when people genuinely believed music could change the world.

This week in entertainment history

On August 13, 1963, the actress Sridevi was born in Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu. That it is a town famous for fireworks is interesting, given that she would one day create sparks of her own on screen years later.
Sridevi went on to star in everything from Hindi to Tamil, Telugu to Malayalam language cinema. She carved a niche for herself in each of these industries, which is testament to her massive talent. Although she began acting when she was just four -- yes, four! -- she got her big break as an adult in the early 1980s with the landmark Tamil film Moondru Mudichu, opposite Kamal Haasan and Rajnikanth.
Her first Hindi film was Solva Saawan (1978), which didn't make an impact. Her second, Himmatwala, was a big success though, and made Jeetendra and Sridevi a popular pair with audiences. Her performance in 1983's Sadma, again opposite Kamal Haasan, remains one of her most acclaimed.
Over the next 10 years, Sridevi continued to dazzle, be it with Nagina or Mr India, Chaalbaaz, Chandni or Lamhe. After 1997's Judaai, she left the industry to marry filmmaker Boney Kapoor and raise her daughters.
She is currently retired from acting. Then again, with famous actors used to the limelight, one never knows...

What makes Bipasha excited

Bipasha Basu has been having a good year. After the hit Race, the actress is looking forward to Yash Raj Films' Bachna Ae Haseeno, releasing this Friday.
She spoke about her experience of working with Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padokune and Minissha Lamba, and much more.
So you are excited about your next release?
Yes, I am. It's a big film and expectations are high. But more than that, it's a great film from Yash Raj.
Your last Yash Raj release Dhoom 2 was also a hit.
Big banners always matter -- they are always important. Yash Raj has always made good films and I am sure this one will also be appreciated by the cinemagoers.
'I haven't done a romantic film in a long time'
Your last film Race was a hit. So you have had a good year so far.
I am keeping my fingers crossed. That film was different from Bachna. I do fewer films these days because I want to do only those films that I enjoy doing. I enjoyed doing this film and more so because of a perfect set of costars and a good director in Siddharth Anand.
I wanted to do a romantic film because I haven't done one for a long time. Bachna Ae Haseeno has a lovely script. My character Radhika was even more attractive -- it was almost custom made for me. I could relate to it. Not only me, the entire casting has been perfect with Deepika, Ranbir and Minissha joining in.

'You can't compare Race and Bachna...'

So how does Radhika look?
It is a glamorous role.
You mean like the one in Race?
You can't compare the two. Race was thriller and this is a romantic film. Radhika is a dancer by profession, who comes to Mumbai and joins Shaimak Dawar's dance group. She is smart, intelligent and highly fashionable. Each character has been given a different kind of look, including mine.
Did you have to work a lot on your look?
No, it was Aki Narula (designer), who gets the credit. He has given me a cool look. He has made me look as much fashionable as possible. He is simply great at his job.

'Ranbir and Deepika did not look like newcomers'

Ranbir Kapoor is the heartthrob of the nation. How was it working with him?
He was great, not because he is the heartthrob of the nation but as a professional too. He is great to work with. The best thing about him is he knows what to do and how to do it.
Ranbir is a simple and down-to-earth guy, who, despite coming from a Kapoor family, doesn't carry an attitude.
You were also the senior-most member among the four actors. Did you come up with suggestions and handy tips?
We had a great time working together. It was great team and you will get to see the outcome once the film releases. Moreover, Ranbir and Deepika did not look like newcomers. The kind of launch they got last year has added to their confidence. The same goes for Minissha. She is a sweet girl and she too has many good films to her credit.
Oh, and I missed out someone's name, who made it all happen. Siddharth Anand, our director. He is young and was full of energy.

'I am particularly excited about my first Bengali film'

What after Bachna Ae Haseeno?
I have Rituparno Ghosh's Sob Charitro Kalponik and another film called Pankh. I am particularly excited about my first Bengali film. It's a very different kind of film and role. You will see a different kind of Bipasha altogether.
We heard that it is a deglam role...
(Smiles) I am not going to say anything. Right now, I am focusing on Bachna Ae Haseeno.

Bush family at Olympics

United States President George W Bush, First Lady Laura Bush and daughter Barbara Bush at the National Aquatics Center on Day 3 of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games on Monday in Beijing, China.

Katrina joins Salman in 10 Ka Dum

Salman Khan's television game show 10 Ka Dum saw the cast of Bachna Ae Haseeno in its special Independence Day episode. Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone and Minissha Lamba added colour to the show, which included severals surprises.
Salman made the evening memorable for Ranbir by presenting him a painting of his grandfather Raj Kapoor that he painted himself.
Deepika floors Salman
When Salman introduced Deepika, she exclaimed, "Thank God you did not introduce me as Shantipriya!" Salman, who may not have seen Shah Rukh Khan's Om Shanti Om -- even though he had a cameo in a song -- did not know who Shantipriya was. Deepika had to explain that it was the name of her character in the film.

Why Deepika and Salman may not work together!

When Deepika told Salman that she wanted to work with him, he replied, "That's if the height does not pose a problem!"
It looks like height may be a problem, after all!

Ranbir goes back in time

10 Ka Dum was shot in RK Studios, making Ranbir go back in time.
"My grandfather shot his first film Aag in this studio," he said. "My dad [Rishi Kapoor] shot for his first film Bobby on this very floor. Now, I am standing here."

When Katrina almost cried in 10 Ka Dum

Finally, the most awaited star made her way to Salman's 10 Ka Dum. Katrina Kaif joined her beau on screen, and the two shared a comfortable space. The actress got upset when she didn't get her answers right, and threatened to cry.
"I am not concerned about you but if your make-up is ruined, the shoot will be further delayed," a guest joked.
Salman promptly rose to her defence and said, "She doesn't use much make-up. She looks just as beautiful without make-up."

Salman: Shah Rukh and I can't be friends

Salman Khan has had enough of Shah Rukh Khan and is no longer interested in patching up with the 'Badshah.' The on and off friendship between the two appears to be over.
"We are two different individuals with different perspectives. I used to like him a lot but things have changed. We do not see eye-to-eye now," Salman told reporters last night on the sets of his new film Veer at Mehboob Studios, in suburban Mumbai.
His remarks come amid reports of a nasty verbal duel between the two Khans at Katrina Kaif's birthday party on July 16. Quite a few film personalities were invited, including Shah Rukh and Aamir Khan. Towards the end of the party, an altercation reportedly broke out between Salman and Shah Rukh allegedly over their respective television shows -- 10 Ka Dum and Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hain.
SRK apparently stormed out of the party with wife Gauri and friend Karan Johar in tow. Aamir reportedly tried to intervene but the two Khans were in no mood to make up.
Salman probably compared his show to SRK's and said that despite his (Shah Rukh) being a superstar, Paanchvi Pass was not doing well. This enraged SRK, who passed a snide remark Aishwarya Rai, Salman's former girlfriend.
"Shah Rukh and I will never patch up," Salman said in an interview to a tabloid. "I am not going to deny that there are issues between us. I am a primitive man born in today's time. I can't fake anything. If there is a problem, I am not going to deny it. We have had problems before also but this time, I don't think we can sort them out. I don't think we can be friends. I think it is better to declare that rather than put on a fake facade of being friends and back-biting each other."
Before the party incident and its ramifications on the power equations, the two superstars shared a lot of history. In his struggling days, SRK even lived in Salman's house. They have acted in three films together -- Karan Arjun, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Hum Tumhare Hai Sanam.
"Yeah, that is in the past," said Salman. "But let me tell you that I have only been to Shah Rukh's house twice in my life."
Ask Salman whether their shows led to this stalemate and he quips, "No, I don't think it is because my show is doing better. I don't think he is that insecure. The reason for the fight is personal."
Salman also set the record straight about his relationship with Katrina. Asked if they are together, he confessed with a 'Yeah.'
But that did not stop him from wondering who was behind the break-up and make-up stories in Bollywood and mainstream press.
"I want to know who are all these friends, sources close to me and my family, who speak on our behalf. My friends will never speak like that. Obviously it is someone, who is insecure, jealous and friendly to the press. Maybe they are someone else's friends," he said.
Salman's new film, God Tussi Great Ho, is out for release this week. Apparently, during the making of the film, things went sour between the actor and his heroine Priyanka Chopra and the two never patched up.
Priyanka recently said that both had a lot of fun making the film, which shows up on-screen. Salman, on the other hand, says "I am cordial with her."

Gowarikar wants to work with Salman Khan

After working with Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan, Ashutosh Gowarikar now wants to work with Salman Khan.
"It's a long cherished dream to work with Salman Khan. As soon as I find a script which suits his image, I will approach him," Gowarikar told PTI at the World Kids International Film Festival held in New Delhi recently.
The director worked with Aamir in Lagaan, which was nominated for Oscar, and with Shah Rukh in Swades. The director, who is known for making period and issue-based films, is trying his hand on comedy for the first time in his upcoming film What's Your Raashee?

Manoj Kumar files case against SRK, Farah and Sony TV

Yesteryear actor Manoj Kumar on Tuesday filed a case against actor Shah Rukh Khan, producer and director Farah Khan and Sony Entertainment Television seeking to delete a scene from the movie Om Shanti Om.Shah Rukh Khan and Farah Khan had earlier assured Kumar that the scene, which makes fun of him, would be deleted from the movie. However, this did not happen and the movie was screened in all theatres without the deletion of the scene.

Katrina: I will work with Salman again

Katrina Kaif has refuted reports that she had decided to end her professional relationship with beau Salman Khan and said that a good script was the only pre-condition for her to sign a film.
"I have never said that I will not work with Salman Khan after Yuvraj," she said. "I always go by the script. I do not know how such speculations float around. If our dates work out, we will feature in Sohail Khan's next film."
On reports that she was no longer part of Shah Rukh Khan's Temptations world tour after the much-hyped SRK-Salman fracas at her birthday party, Katrina said that she enjoyed dancing, and being on stage. "If dates permit, I will be a part of the show," she said.
Katrina, who recently replaced Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as the ambassador of Nakshtra jewellary brand, revealed that she is leaving for the US to shoot for Kabir Khan's film, to be produced by Yash Raj Films, this week. The actress will be paired opposite John Abraham in this yet-untitled film.
"This will be my longest outdoor schedule ever," she said.
