Double tons by Gambhir, Laxman force Australia into a hole

Gautam Gambhir struck his maiden double century while VVS Laxman, a familiar Australia nemesis, got his second as India sought to bury the visitors under a run mountain in the third cricket Test here today.

Gambhir (206) and Laxman (200 not out) added 278 runs for the fourth wicket, laying bare the frailties of the Australian bowling attack in the process and then some brisk batting down the order helped India pile up 613 for seven before declaring their first essay 75 minutes after tea.

An exasperated Ricky Ponting pressed in service as many as seven Australian bowlers before deciding to bowl himself but in the end, the miracle he was looking for never really happened.

Australia were 50 for no loss in their reply with Simon Katich (29) and Matthew Hayden (16) in the middle, needing another 364 to avoid the ignominy of follow-on.

Gambhir's career-best 206 came off 380 balls, with 26 fours and a six in it, while Laxman's unbeaten 200 was the result of his 301-ball stay in the middle, during which he hit 21 fours.

Once India resumed their innings at 296 for three wickets, it was evident that there is something in the baggy green which brings out the best in Laxman. Even the ultra-aggressive Gambhir was content admiring the stylish right-hander from the non-striker's end as Laxman went on to torment the Australian bowlers.

Laxman opened the face of the blade to run down Stuart Clark for the first boundary of the morning and that opened the sluice gate.

What followed was a deluge of boundaries and the Australians were suddenly on a leather hunt. When he was not making those deft placements with his soft hands, Laxman was executing some breathtaking pull shots, the best of which came off a Mitchell Johnson delivery that scorched the grass in the mid-wicket region before crossing the ropes.

Not that Gambhir was silent all along. Against Australia's toothless attack, self-destruction was the only way the Indians could get out and Gambhir was not ready to do anything silly and let the double century slip through his fingers.

So unlike his first century, the Delhi batsman tip-toed his way into the 190s and finally had his moment when he tucked Brett Lee for a single to reach the 200 mark.

The more-than-nine-hour stay in the middle, however, had started taking toll on his weary mind and a tired-looking Gambhir dragged a Shane Watson delivery on to the stumps to perish, not before establishing himself as the leading scorer in the ongoing series.

Australia soon had another celebration as Sourav Ganguly (5) could not make his final Kotla Test memorable and fell to Katich but that brought in Mahendra Singh Dhoni (27) and Australian bowlers started bleeding boundaries.

Back-to-back boundaries off Katich only whetted Dhoni's appetite and he hit the bowler over his head for the maximum. Watson also came in for some harsh treatment when he was smote for two successive boundaries but the pacer eventually settled score in the same over, getting Dhoni caught behind.

Anil Kumble (45) threw his bat around to good effect, hitting seven fours before Mitchell Johnson trapped him five-run shy of his fifty. Laxman went on to complete his 200 and Kumble immediately declared the innings.

56 dead, 350 injured as 13 blasts rock Assam

Terror struck the hub of North-East when over a dozen blasts ripped through commercial areas of the capital and three other districts on Thursday, killing 56 people and injuring 350 others. ( Watch
The first of the 13 bombs, suspected to have been planted by Bangladesh-based HuJI members, went off simultaneously around 11.30 am under the Ganeshguri flyover, near the high-security capital complex housing the Assembly building, Paltan Bazar and Fancy Bazar here.
Around the same time, bombs also went off in crowded market places of Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon and Barpeta districts in lower Assam. ( Watch )

Black smoke billowed from the Deputy Commissioner's Office housing the district courts, which bore the brunt of the attacks in Guwahati, as vehicles, including a number of cars, turned into mangled heaps of metal.
Police suspected that the bomb was planted in the court complex on a two-wheeler.

At least 25 people were killed and 235 injured in the blasts in Guwahati where an indefinite curfew was clamped following protests by residents, who accused the police of delayed action.
While 19 were killed and 64 injured in Kokrajhar, 12 died in Barpeta and 46 others were wounded. Five people were injured in Bongaigaon, Principal Secretary (Home) Subhash Das said.

A red alert has been sounded across the state and army has also been put on alert in view of the security situation, he said after Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi held a review meeting with his cabinet colleagues and top officials.

Diwali leaves many in darkness

CHANDIGARH: The festival of lights has once again left many lives in dark forever. Besides many burn cases, a few eye injuries too were reported. Last year the city nursed the wounds of 158 persons, and this time the festival left as many as 117 injured in the region.

Happy to see Akash, 5, jumping with joy after firing a bomb, little did his parents know that it could be the last flash of light in his life. Like him, eight more children suffered eye injuries. “One of the victims has completely lost his vision, but others may show positive signs after surgery,” said Amod Gupta, head of advance eye centre, PGI.

In yet another case, watching a misdirected rocket proved detrimental for Vivek, 10, from Patiala. “He was enjoying the fireworks from a distance when all of a sudden something hit his eyes,” said his relative.

Narrating a similar incident, nine-year-old Akash’s mother from Parwanoo said, “We were in our balcony when a rocket left my son injured.”

After seeing one of the brightest flames of the festival, these eye injury cases are in bandages at the moment. “Out of 13 surgeries performed, six cases have shown bleak chances of regaining vision,” Gupta said.

While some of the eye injury cases were due to the misdirected fireworks, others were the outcome of faulty experiments.“One of the patients had inserted the explosive in a plastic pipe to enhance the speed of the projectile,” said Amit Gupta, ophthalmologist, PGI.

“My son was seeing the neighbours when a splinter from a cracker entered his eye,” said Manju, mother of Sachin, 6, from Derrabassi. Only after operating upon him will the doctors come to know if he could see again or not. Sunandan Sood, head of the opthamology, GMCH said, “We will conduct the surgery only after his chest infectionsubsides. He is the most serious eye injury case in our hospital. Out of the 12 cases reported, six were admitted and three were discharged, but they all do not have a normal vision now.”

“Out of 23 injured, majority of the patients are in the age group of 8-15 years,” said Amit Gupta, eye bank in charge, PGI.

Besides eye injuries, not-so-serious facial and hand injuries were also reported. PGI witnessed seven body burn cases, while GMCH had 24 burn cases.

Akki hosts the best Diwali bash

After missing Diwali celebrations last year due to the Singh is Kinng shoot schedule in Australia, Akki was quite upbeat about spending this Diwali with family and friends. To make it special this year, wife Twinkle arranged for a chic bash at their Juhu residence and the invite was sent to the who’s who in the industry.

And with the biggest stars on the guest list, Akshay’s party was touted to be the chicest in Mumbai. And thus it was... truly!

The first ones to reach the party were Kirron Kher and Sikander. The Kher Sher looked a true stud in his white Sherwani.

Pakistan army kills 23 militants

At least 23 militants were killed by Pakistan's security forces in an operation on Wednesday that continued overnight into Thursday in northwestern Bajaur tribal district, media reported. Gunship helicopters started strafing Charming, Cheenar, Kohi and Babarha areas of Nawagai regions of Bajaur, destroying many underground hideouts and bunkers of militants, Geo TV reported.

The district bordering Afghanistan is one of the tribal regions where militants, crossing over from Afghanistan, have strongly entrenched themselves. Military sources said earlier that over 1,000 militants had been killed in Bajaur's military operation since it was launched Aug 6.

Raj exempted from appearing in Vikhroli court

MNS chief Raj Thackeray was on Thursday exempted from appearing in the Vikhroli Metropolitan magistrate court following a plea filed by his lawyer.

Sameer Nagare filed a plea in this regard in the court on Thursday stating that since Raj has been released on bail only on Wednesday, he will not be able to appear before it.

Vikhroli Magistrate Sunil Gaidhani had asked Raj to appear before it on Thursday. The court had also issued a notice to the leader asking why his bail should not be cancelled as he had flouted the bail conditions.

The MNS chief was given bail by this court in February this year in a case pertaining to making derogatory statements against north Indians.

Nagare said they would file a reply to the notice on November 7.

Salman, Ajay miss India in London

Actor Salman Khan is currently in London. No, he ain't there visiting Katrina Kaif, instead is there to shoot for Vipul Shah's London Dreams , while the beautiful Kat is in Philadelphia for a shooting schedule again. So while in London, the Khan, instead of going beserk over what the lah-di-dah restarurants there have to offer, is insistent on having Indian khaana.

Also, Vipul is known to spoil his cast silly and give to them whatever they demand. But all that Sallu asks for is roti-sabzi . Well, talk about high thinking and simple living, eh? Funnily, his co-actor Ajay Devgan is sailing in the same boat. "He's very non-experimental when it comes to food," says Vipul about Ajay's food habits, "And settles for Indian food as well, wherever he goes."

Producer Vipul Shah finds the actresses more experimental when it comes to food. "While the actors are always settle for something tried and tested, the actresses, I've noticed prefer to try exotic stuff and are more experimental. Even while we were shooting Singh Is Kinng , Katrina Kaif and Neha Dhupia used to jump at the idea of tasting a new dish, while Akshay had his fixed diet and wouldn't explore too much."

The many Khans in Preity’s life

The bubbly and beautiful Preity Zinta is one of the few actresses who have worked with all the hottest Khans in B-town. Just a few days away from the release of her flick, Heroes, where she is romantically paired opposite Salman Khan, she chats up with Indiatimes Movies and reveals all that there is about her and the Khans!

While she rates all the four Khans - Shahrukh, Salman, Aamir and Saif, extremely high on their ‘sex appeal’, there are a few things that are different and unique about each one of them and Preity spills all the beans here.

John-Bipasha take 'family' decisions

Actors John and Bipasha should get an award... the actors have lasted long and are still going strong. Touted as one of the 'solid jodis' of Bollywood, John and Bips are now involved in taking some 'family' decisions as well.

Not much is known of their plans to tie the knot, but we definitely know that when Bips nephew was to seek school admission in Mumbai, boyfriend John insisted he go to Bombay Scottish - the same school he went to. And now the two - nephew and John - bond like school buddies and constantly talk about their school being the 'bestest'.

Aunt Bipasha feels pretty left out, but enjoys the camaraderie the two share. "I see him growing up to be like John, he even reacts the way John would to a certain remark or statement," says Bipasha, "And it's all because of the school, I think." About a serious future plan, the couple is busy with their respective careers, and hope to tie the knot when the time is right.

But till such time, we should just enjoy the handsome couple that is John and Bipasha!

German girl's rape: Mum accuses another minister kin

In another twist to the rape case of a German, the girl's mother on Thursday told police that State Public Works Department minister Churchill Alemao's nephew, Warren Alemao, had also sexually abused her 14-year-old girl along with education minister Atanasio Monserratte's son Rohit. ( Watch )

"We have submitted to the police the photograph of Warren in compromising position with the girl traced on the net," Aires Rodrigues, counsel for the mother, told a press conference here where the German woman was also present.

"We have passed on the entire information to the police who are investigating the charges against Rohit. If police demands, we will give a formal complaint. But I don't think the complaint is required as the investigating agency is probing the matter from all the angles," Rodrigues said.

The German mother on October 2 had accused education minister Atanasio Monserratte's son Rohit of raping her daughter. The Police, after initial delay, had booked Rohit on October 14.

She said that she came to know recently about Warren's involvement in the case and promptly passed on the information to the police.

The mother said that she had heard about Warren being her daughter's friend but never met him. "She has a big friends circle and its intermingling. I had heard these names (Rohit and Warren) but never met them," the German woman, who is in Goa for a research project, said.

Rodrigues stated that during one of the telephonic conversations, Alemao had conceded involvement of his nephew in this case. "He had named Warren's elder brother. But in the photograph we have found his younger brother," the legal counsel told reporters.

He said that the police have taken all the email addresses of the victim girl and they are checking the details.

Oh My Dear ! Don't go Away.

Recall all of sweet memories,
What Made us Smile.

I've Remember those Moments,
When you hugged me,
I've Remember those Moments,
When we met first time,
Please you recall all that.

My Mind Flashing Back all golden moments,
What we spend for each others,
Yours Lovly Smile,
My Stupid Gossip,
My careless act,
Yours Worried Face,
Plz you Recall ............ .........

But What happen now?
Why are you so Silent Today?
Why your Face telling me A strange Story?
Plz You Speak out......... .....

I'm Still Waiting you,
I'm Still missing you,
Came back Dear....
Please Hug me Dear.

I'm Still on the Way,
Oh My Dear, Don't Go Away.

A Perfect Day

WHEN THINGS GO BAD, always remember: It could be worse.
NEVER, NEVER GIVE UP. Keep working on your speech and your life.
NEVER LOSE YOUR SENSE OF HUMOR. Laugh at yourself, laugh with others.
STEM DEPRESSION by thinking of, reaching out to and helping others.
DO UNTO OTHERS as you would have them do unto you.
PRAY, not for God to cure you but to help you help yourself.
Whatever you plan today,
I hope it's just right.

Soha-ppy to be together

HTML clipboardPost her break-up with Rang De Basanti actor Siddharth, Soha Ali Khan is in love again.

She is now seeing Kunal Khemu. According to an onlooker, the young couple looked happy together during the screening of The Journey to the Center of the Earth held in Mumbai recently.

An eyewitness said, “An official tried to click pictures of Soha and Kunal together, but they made a hasty retreat before they could be caught hanging out together. They both became good friends during the making of Dhoondte Reh Jaaoge, in which they star together. They continued to remain in touch even after the film’s shooting was complete. They were even spotted walking hand-in-hand for the special show of the Brendan Fraser starrer The Journey to the Center of the Earth,” added the source.

Incidentally, Kunal had sent a special invitation to Soha for the preview of his film, Superstar. Soha was present throughout the screening of the film.

Due to problems in her personal life, Soha was going through a low phase while shooting for Dhoondte Reh Jaaoge. She then got close to Kunal who unlike Siddharth is very attentive and considerate. The source said, “Soha found an anchor in Kunal. The two turned good friends. However, the friendship has turned into a serious relationship as they have been paired together once again for a film titled 99. Soha and Kunal looked absolutely comfortable together during the launch bash of the new film.”

We contacted Soha, who laughed and said, “Yes, we did go to see a film a few weeks ago with a few friends. We worked together in Dhoondte... and are working together once again in 99. Of course, we are friends! I am lucky to be working with Kunal, he’s the most talented young actor in the film industry.” And Kunal said, “Yes, Soha and I are great friends and we do go out together. We share an excellent rapport. What’s the harm in that? People are going to talk about two stars doing two films together. I don’t want to say anything beyond that.”

Why Dia will not walk the ramp?

Actress Dia Mirza, who had walked the ramp during the last edition of LFW in April, will not be seen at any of the fashion weeks in Delhi.

Dia, who was here recently, told us, “I love walking the ramp. Modelling is still very close to my heart and I love the adrenaline rush that a show gives. The thunderous applause and fashionable dresses – I love it all. But this time, I will not be here when the fashion weeks happen in Delhi. I will be in Cape Town , finishing the last leg of shooting for Ramu’s film Acid Factory.”

The actress, it seems, has also fallen in love with Delhi. “I am happy that work keeps bringing me to Delhi. I simply love the city,” she said.

‘Ravana & Sita dancing together?’

If Harbhajan Singh hoped that controversy would not follow him from the cricket field to the dance floor, he’ll be disappointed.

His Ravana-Sita dance number with Mona ‘Jassi’ Singh on Ek Khiladi EK Haseena has left the Sikh clergy clearly unimpressed.

Bhajji and Mona, both Sikhs, performed the number on the show last week. Gurbachan Singh, acting head of the Akal Takht, has taken strong exception to their depiction of mythological figures. “Though I have not received a complaint, I think it is unreasonable to mock religious figures like this. Ravana is known as evil. How can Ravana and Sita dance together? That the dance was done by two Sikhs is condemnable,” Singh said. He added that if he got any complaint in this regard, he would inquire into it and initiate religious action against the ‘erring’ stars.

Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) president Avtar Singh Makkar said that
celebrities should desist from such things as they are role models for fans. Radical Hindu organisations have also objected to the dance number that allegedly mocked Hindu sentiments. “We should show respect to all religions. If we cannot tolerate anything against our religion, how can we mock at others?” Singh said.

Sylvester Stallone to attend India premiere of Kambakht Ishq

TML clipboard

Producer Sajid Nadiadwala has hit it off so well with Sylvester Stallone while shooting for Kambakht Ishq that he has convinced the Rocky star to attend the premiere of the film here as well as to work together in more movies.

"Yes, Stallone will be coming to Mumbai for the premiere. In fact, we have hit it off so well that I've convinced him for more collaborations with us," Nadiadwala told IANS.

"However, it's too premature to talk about any concrete plans between the two of us. He did give me a book to read, but that doesn't mean I'm making a movie out of it, not yet."

The producer has huge plans for Kambkaht Ishq. He plans to have an international release of the English version of the movie at the same time with the Hindi in April-May 2009.

"It'll be a much shorter version of the original. While the Hindi version will be around 130 minutes, the English version will be 90-100 minutes long and without any song."

Nadiadwala is working on the English version of Kambakht Ishq. Though Akshay is all set to finally go international with his first English-language film, he won't be heard speaking in his own voice.

"I'll get dubbing artistes from outside India to dub for everyone, excluding Sylvester Stallone. Akshay certainly can't make himself comprehensible to American audiences in his own voice," said Nadiadwala from Vicenza in Italy, where the last portion of Kambhakt Ishq is being shot with Kareena, Akshay, Aftab Shivdasani and Amrita Arora.

To knock off the elaborate Hindi song sequences for the English version, Sajid is getting a creative music director from Hollywood as a consultant.

"We've zeroed in on three guys who specialise in editing Hollywood musicals including the gentleman who did The Wedding Singer. I'll hire one of them to put together the English version of Kambhakt Ishq. I don't want it to be seen as a dubbed Bollywood film. I want it to be on a par with the American releases, just as slick."

This is where the presence of Stallone, Denise Richards and Entourage star Holy Valencia would help.

"These stars would help bring in the American audience and establish a connect with the film. Like in India, most audiences won't care about Stallone and other Hollywood stars. They'll just go to watch Akshay."

Nadiadwala is hoping Kambakht Ishq would be the international launch of Akshay's career.

"He has it in him. And we've worked really hard to give Kambakht an international look and feel. My film has gone way above budget. I don't think I'll ever be able to make a film so expensive. The ticket fare to Europe alone costs what was the entire budget of my first production."

Dussehra in New Delhi

Prime minister, Dr Manmohan singh performs aarti on the occasion of Dussehra at Ram Lila maidan in New Delhi.

Tabu, Big B make history!

In their first film together (and, her last), the gorgeous Tabu and the charismatic Amitabh Bachchan were passion ignited and delightful comedy on screen in Cheeni Kum.

Now, Bollywood has conspired to bring them together again, but in a big and lavish period film based on the life of the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka. The reclusive Tabu has signed on to play the role of the emperor’s wife who, history recalls, brought the Mauryan dynasty down on its knees. The Big B, of course, will be Ashoka the Great. And critics and fans alike will wait to see whether they recreate their magic on screen again.

Though they belong to different generations (Tabu is 38, Bachchan will be 66), the two made light of the in-between years to bond in Cheeni Kum. Now they are going back several centuries in The Legend of Kunal, the historical film directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi and produced by AB Corp Ltd, for which Jaya Bachchan was said to be originally considered before Tabu for the role ofQueen Tishyarakshita.

Dwivedi said he had no difficulty pairing the two again. “Tabu didn’t hesitate a moment to say yes to the role of the Emperor’s powerful wife who swayed the Mauryan empire with her beauty and politics. We needed an actress with the strength of conviction. Tishyarakshita was unique and such an extraordinary and enigmatic character has never found expression in our cinema,” the director said.

Interestingly, last year Raj Kumar Santoshi had planned a film based on Emperor Ashoka and had cast Ajay Devgan and Bipasha Basu in the two roles.

But Santoshi soon abandoned the idea. Said Dr Dwivedi, “History and its cinematic treatment demand the characters to be true to their antecedents. And Emperor Ashoka, who’s caught in his twilight years in my film, had to be played by Bachchan.

Only he possesses the gravity, sobriety, wisdom and personality along with the age required. I wouldn’t make Ashoka without him. As for Tabu, she plays his young, fiery and assertive wife. Again, only she could play Tishyarakshita.”

Akshay lures Superman to India

Akshay Kumar is going places. The actor who is enjoying box office success and the status of numero uno in Bollywood is slowly broadening his horizons.

Better known as Superman from the Superman series, Brandon Routh has been roped in by producer Sajid Nadiadwala for his magnum opus, Kambhaqt Ishq. Nadiadwala is getting the who's who of Hollywood to star in his film that is being directed by newbie director Sabir Khan. After Slyvester Stallone and Denise Richards, it is Brandon Routh.

A source present on the sets revealed, "Akshay and Brandon had to perform a stunt scene together. It was the most crucial scene of the film. It was the most dangerous too. Brandon was very impressed with Akshay after watching him perform dangerous stunts for the film. He was surprised that in Bollywood actors performed the stunt scenes themselves."

"Also both the stars exchanged tips on fitness action and martial arts. It was fun to see them bond. Brandon was very happy working with the team of Kambakkth... It is difficult to get him considering his phenomenol popularity as Superman," disclosed our source.

Charles Sobhraj ties the knot with Nihita Biswas

Once known as the Serpent and Bikini Killer, Charles Sobhraj acquired a new moniker on Wednesday: newly-wed, tying the knot Nepali-style with his 20-year-old Nepali fiancée Nihita Biswas.

On Wednesday, Nepal celebrated Bada Dashami, the 10th day of its biggest Hindu festival Dashain, traditionally regarded as an auspicious day for weddings. While pairs headed for temples to say “I do”, for 64-year-old Sobhraj, it was a more sombre ceremony in Kathmandu’s Central Jail where he has been serving a life sentence for murder.

The bride wore a pink T-shirt and trousers while Sobhraj kept his trademark cap as they exchanged vows and tikas, the red vermilion mark. He was allowed to come out of his cell and in the presence of curious prison guards and other inmates, the short ceremony was conducted to make them husband and wife.

The "marriage" comes after their engagement in July following Nihita's visit to the prison to offer to interpret for Sobhraj's visiting French lawyer, a visit whic both say resulted in love at first sight.

However, like the whirlwind romance that was marked by controversy, the wedding is also going to be controversial. There was no priest though the bride’s brother and mother Shakuntala Thapa turned up to show their support. Thapa, a leading lawyer, is also fighting Sobhraj’s case in Supreme Court, challenging a lower court decision that declared him guilty of the murder of an American backpacker, Connie Jo Bronzich, in 1975.

Sobhraj’s appeal will be heard on October 19, after Nepal’s courts reopen after the long holiday break. If he is set free by the apex court, as Nihita claims it will, the couple plan to proceed to France and get married in accordance with French laws.

The wedding is Sobhraj’s second one, though in between he had several girlfriends and a common law wife of Chinese origin with whom he has a daughter. The newly weds have decided that the daughter, now six, will live with them.

Sobhraj’s only recorded and official wedding was to a French woman who divorced him during his imprisonment in India and later married an American.

If the apex court rejects Sobhraj’s appeal, the couple has decided that Nihita will go to the International Court of Justice to fight for his release. Sobhraj claims he was framed by police and not given a fair trial.

Always In My Heart

As I sit here on my balcony,
I stare into the sky...
gazing at the stars,
I often wonder why......

why does it have to be like this?
What did I do wrong?
To deserve this pain in my heart,
I hope it won't last long.

Now I stare at your picture,
and think to myself...
How could someone I loved so long,
love somebody else?

An hour passes by,
and I finally go inside

Still thinking about your beauty,
something inside me dies.

I want to pick up the phone,
'cause I want to hear your voice...
But something is telling me,
that I have no other choice......

but to let you go,
and to leave you all alone...
'cause you said it's for the best-
but you're all I've ever known.

So I guess it won't be easy,
to let you go like this...
I'll remember the way we used to be,
and the way we used to meet.

I've loved you for so long now,
but I guess I can't say "no"...
I know I'll miss you dearly,
but I've got to let you go.

I don't so I hope she takes care of you...
I hope she'll truly love you,
'cause I know I'll always do.

Well I guess it's time now,
for us to be apart...
I'll make this last promise to you,
****$$$$****

Koi Naraz Hai Humse,
 K Hum Kuch Likhte Nahi,
Kaha Se Laye Lafz Jab Wo Milte Nahi,
Dard Ki Zuban Hoti To Bata Dete,
Wo Zakhm Kaise Bataye Jo Dikhte Nahi

please don't forget me

BO: Kidnap survives; Drona dies

The supposed big clash at the box-office this week turned out to be quite a cold affair. Abhishek Bachchan starrer Drona opened to very bad reviews and collections. But this box-office clash wasn't like the earlier big clash of this year when Love Story 2050 and Jaane Tu ... Ya Jaane Na released on July 4. Those releases met with diverse response where the former was a disaster while the latter was a big hit.

Unfortunately, this week’s other release Kidnap, which has received far better collections than Drona, can still not be claimed as a hit. The collections are only comparatively better but otherwise Kidnap’s opening is below the mark and trade analysts believe it will be difficult for the distributors to recover the money, with the collections sliding down in following days. Drona is clearly predicted to be a box-office disaster.

Even in the international market Kidnap is much ahead of Drona. UK which is regarded as the toughest international territory had Kidnap overtake Drona at the box-office. The opening weekend collection for Kidnap is Euro 243'309 from 51 screens and for Drona is Euro 117'854 from 56 screens (Source: Neilsen EDI). With a Per Screen Average of Euro 4'771 Kidnap beats Drona which has a Per Screen Average of Euro 2'104. The gross of Kidnap exceeds that of Drona by 106% and the screen average exceeds by 126%.

The coming week sees only one Hindi film release, which is a rarity in the current scenario where every week has seen an average of 3 releases. Moreover, like the last week, the coming week again has an additional advantage of a Thursday holiday (Dussera) making for an extended weekend for the films. Despite that not many producers preferred to release their films in this week perhaps anticipating competition from this week’s releases. With the mediocre business of Drona and Kidnap, there wasn’t much competition and unfortunately the producers lost on the holiday period.

That qualifies Hello as the solo release for this week. Promoted largely on Salman Khan’s star-value, the film has Sharman Joshi and Sohail Khan in lead roles along with Gul Panag, Eiesha Koppikhar and Amrita Arora. Let’s see if the film clicks and encourages more novels to be adapted into cinematic form.

The third release of this week Ramchand Pakistani was more restricted to the niche audience for its offbeat feel.

‘I can’t call myself King’

Salman Khan’s got a release this week.

But, never one for self-promotion, he’s gone into hiding. “My job is to act, to publicise the film on its merits, I’m not here to con my fans. From the promos, fans know if they want to see the film. Main apna dhindora nahi peet ta. I don’t do things like call myself ‘King’ because then my friends will start to refer to me by that title and then their friends — and before I know it, I will have a title attached to my name that I gave myself! I’m happy the way I am,” the macho star told BT in a phone-in yesterday. Excerpts from the conversation...

In your new film, a girl breaks up with the guy she loves for a NRI match with better prospects. If this happened to you in real life, would you forgive her?
To each his own. If that person is going to give her more security and more love; if she and her children will get a good life, and she is getting nothing here from this guy, then I think it’s good.

Dilko Samjhaun Kasie ...

Tadapta Hai Dil Dilko Samjhaun Kasie,
Jo Khel Khelti Hai Zindagi Usko Nibhaun Kaise,

WaQt Ke Haathon Maar Khata Raha Hoon Main,
Phir Bhi Na Badla Khudko Samjhaun Kaise,

Dil Mein Dard, Dard Mein Zakham Hai Laakhon,
 Har Zakhm Tumko Dikhaun Kaise,

Aaj Ro Bhi Nahi Sakta, Kaise Kahoon Kuch,
Marna Chahta Hoon Is Zindagi Ko Nibhaun Kaise...

Hiding - The Pain..

When I smile at you
It's the other side of me
hiding the pain in my eyes
I want to have your heart
 but you won't let me

It's hard to hold back my tears
 I'm here to care
 and comfort you

It's your heart I want to win
 I won't be happy

 until you're in my arms
and I know you're finally mine
I don't know what to think
 or want me to be

I just know I want you
 and maybe someday
 you'll want me

What made Priyanka weep?

Nah, nah, it’s not her four flops in a row that’s making the girl weep.

Actually, it’s a more sentimental story. Priyanka Chopra has been shooting for Madhur Bhandarkar’s Fashion for a year now. And in the process, got so comfortable with the unit members that a different kind of bond was formed between them.

So on the last day of the shoot, it wasn’t easy for the Chopra girl to fathom that everyone would go his or her own separate way. She got so sentimental that tears flowed down her cheeks. Madhur tells us, “We’ve been shooting on and off for almost a year now. And as a unit have become very close to each other. We were all very emotional on our last day of shoot. Priyanka actually met each and everyone to say thanks. That was touching!” So life is all “Drona-rona” for the actress right now. We hope Fashion will get her smiling ear-to-ear!

Pamela strips for Hefner's birthday

Former Playboy playmate Pamela Anderson gave a surprise to the magazine's chief Hugh Hefner on his 82nd birthday by offering him a cake in the nude.

The 41-year-old actress also performed a lap dance for Hefner, reports dailymail.co.uk. She was joined by his three girlfriends Holly Madison, Bridget Marquardt, and Kendra Wilkinson at the party in Las Vegas.

The censored version of the nude show was broadcast on US reality show “The Girls Next Door” Sunday night - six months after Hefner's birthday bash. Pamela has appeared in the Playboy 13 times since her pre-“Baywatch” debut in 1989 and recently admitted she is hoping for a 14th pictorial.

Girls opt for sexier 'cholis' this Navratri

This Navratri, tuck away your clumsy looking, long sleeved, heavily embroidered cholis into your closet and replace them with skimpier, sexier and trendy cholis that have become the favourite among young girls.

"Young girls know their minds. They do not want to look ancient by wearing traditional, loose fitting cholis. They want to look sexy and enjoy the garba in style," designer Alpana of the Azara label said.

"Corset shaped cholis are very popular because it manages to hide all the flab from your upper body and make you look slimmer," she added.

The festival of Navratri includes performing the garba - the dance of creation. Time was when men in traditional dhoti-kurta and women in chania-choli (mirror-work skirts and blouses) performed the garba, but now traditional culture has taken a backseat and contemporary music and attire are the front-runners.

"I look forward to participating in garba dance nights because it gives me a reason to dress up and to enjoy with my friends," college student Sakshi Sharma said.

"Every year there is a new trend in cholis but the crux remains the same - everyone wants a choli that is sexy but not too revealing and yet should manage to grab all the attention," she added.

Designer Pallavi Jaikishen, who specialises in bridal wear, agrees that cholis no longer follow monotonous and boring traditional patterns. "Cholis are getting short and sexy. Young girls prefer it that way. They do not want to be uncomfortable in their cholis but they want to make a style statement also," she said. "The more skin you reveal, the more attention you get," she added.

Apart from cholis, tube tops, bustiers and halter-tops are also becoming popular, but noodle straps are a big no this season. "Other than corsets, tube tops, bustiers and halter-tops are replacing traditional cholis and girls are teaming them up with fancy skirts," designer Charu Parasher said. "Noodle straps are a big no this season. You can also experiment with low back or backless blouses that give a traditional feel to the attire," she added.

According to designer Falguni Peacock of Shane-Falguni duo, the cholis have become westernised and youngsters are paying attention to the cuts and the comfort level of these cholis.

"You can experiment with designs, but it's very important to be comfortable in a choli. One should pay attention to the cuts and the fitting of the choli," Falguni explained.

Software professional Garima Pandit agreed with this, saying, "You dance for long hours, all drenched in sweat, so it is necessary to pay attention to the fit and comfort of the choli." "One should not become a fashion victim and choose fashion over comfort," she added.
