BO: Kidnap survives; Drona dies

The supposed big clash at the box-office this week turned out to be quite a cold affair. Abhishek Bachchan starrer Drona opened to very bad reviews and collections. But this box-office clash wasn't like the earlier big clash of this year when Love Story 2050 and Jaane Tu ... Ya Jaane Na released on July 4. Those releases met with diverse response where the former was a disaster while the latter was a big hit.

Unfortunately, this week’s other release Kidnap, which has received far better collections than Drona, can still not be claimed as a hit. The collections are only comparatively better but otherwise Kidnap’s opening is below the mark and trade analysts believe it will be difficult for the distributors to recover the money, with the collections sliding down in following days. Drona is clearly predicted to be a box-office disaster.

Even in the international market Kidnap is much ahead of Drona. UK which is regarded as the toughest international territory had Kidnap overtake Drona at the box-office. The opening weekend collection for Kidnap is Euro 243'309 from 51 screens and for Drona is Euro 117'854 from 56 screens (Source: Neilsen EDI). With a Per Screen Average of Euro 4'771 Kidnap beats Drona which has a Per Screen Average of Euro 2'104. The gross of Kidnap exceeds that of Drona by 106% and the screen average exceeds by 126%.

The coming week sees only one Hindi film release, which is a rarity in the current scenario where every week has seen an average of 3 releases. Moreover, like the last week, the coming week again has an additional advantage of a Thursday holiday (Dussera) making for an extended weekend for the films. Despite that not many producers preferred to release their films in this week perhaps anticipating competition from this week’s releases. With the mediocre business of Drona and Kidnap, there wasn’t much competition and unfortunately the producers lost on the holiday period.

That qualifies Hello as the solo release for this week. Promoted largely on Salman Khan’s star-value, the film has Sharman Joshi and Sohail Khan in lead roles along with Gul Panag, Eiesha Koppikhar and Amrita Arora. Let’s see if the film clicks and encourages more novels to be adapted into cinematic form.

The third release of this week Ramchand Pakistani was more restricted to the niche audience for its offbeat feel.
