At least 23 militants were killed by Pakistan's security forces in an operation on Wednesday that continued overnight into Thursday in northwestern Bajaur tribal district, media reported. Gunship helicopters started strafing Charming, Cheenar, Kohi and Babarha areas of Nawagai regions of Bajaur, destroying many underground hideouts and bunkers of militants, Geo TV reported.
The district bordering Afghanistan is one of the tribal regions where militants, crossing over from Afghanistan, have strongly entrenched themselves. Military sources said earlier that over 1,000 militants had been killed in Bajaur's military operation since it was launched Aug 6.
